Gift Card Skirt

This project was for my ready-to-wear construction class. We all needed to create a garment from unconventional materials. I chose using gift cards as a recycled materials because I was working in the retail world during the holidays and the number of plastic cards we sold and threw away was overwhelming. My first step was to gather a large amount of gift cards, I reached out to friends and family, retail stores and several gift card manufacturers for used or defective cards.

After gathering the gift cards, I went to work creating the garment. It took several steps, which followed:

1. Cut gift card into smaller pieces

2. Punch guitar picks out of the smaller pieces

3. Drill holes into guitar picks

4. Sew picks onto strips of fabric by hand

5. Sew strips of guitar pick fabric onto skirt shell
